The battle cruisers of the "Izmail" - type are the most powerful in their type at the moment of laying and the biggest artillery ships, which were ever launched from the domestic shipyards. The series of four ships - "Izmail", "Borodino", "Kinburn" and "Navarin" was created for the Russian Imperial Fleet. Being planned as a "Russian response" for the British ship, "Izmails" could have become the pride of the Russian fleet. In December, 1912, all four gigantic cruisers ("Borodino", "Kinburn", "Navarin", and "Izmail") were simultaneously laid on the stocks of St.Peterburg, which had been free empty for two years after launching of the battleships of the "Gangut"-type. However, the Revolution and the Civil War in Russia did not allow to complete those ships. In October-December, 1917, Provisional Government resolved to stop building of some ships, including such ships as "Borodino", "Kinburn", "Navarin" and "Izmail". There were several projects of completing of "Izmail", including a project of reconstruction it into an aircraft carrier, but at the beginning of the 30-s its hull was disassembled. Some part of the "Ismail`s" boilers were installed on the battle cruiser "October Revolution" in the process of its renovation. Three guns of the main caliber were installed on the specially projected rail road artillery launch pads; after successful testing in 1932-1933 they received in assignment of the artillery of the coastal defense of the decorated with the Order of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet; during the years of the Leningrad Blockade they successfully defeated from the fascists` manpower, machinery and defensive installations. |
