"Cosmonaut Yuriy Gagarin" - a big scientific-research ship, which was the flagship among the ships of the Space Research Satellite Service of the USSR. The ship was built at the Baltic shipbuilding plant in Leningrad in 1971. The maximum length of the eleven-deck ship was 231,6 m, the width - 32 m, the capacity of the main power installation - 14 000 kilowatt. The ship displacement was 45 000 tons, the maximum rate of sailing - 18 knots, the crew - 136 people, the expedition team - 212 people. In general on the ship there were 1 250 different rooms, including 86 laboratories. The ship was designed to solve tasks of connecting and managing with several space ships simultaneously and also with the Mission Control Centre. For these purposes on the ship there were 75 antennas, including two big antennas with parabolic reflectors with diameter of 25 m. The place of working of the ship was the Atlantic Ocean. The ship could be in self-contained navigation during 130 days. The scientific - research ship (SRS) "Cosmonaut Yuriy Gagarin" (the project of the year 1909) was created on the base of the tanker of the 1552-project and was the biggest and the most perfect from the technique side expedition vessel in the world.
